When I'm ...No, don't really pay attention. When I'm done, what do you know, I'm in the correct zone! I think if you read a lot of your genre, you get an instinctive feel for how long your work should be.Fairviewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06130996970916886241noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929885462293344093.post-33159118326263491642012-04-26T18:02:52.479-07:002012-04-26T18:02:52.479-07:00I never really understood the need for word count ...I never really understood the need for word count conventions in the early days, but I get it more now. And I definitely see how some of my extremely overbloated first drafts needed severe revision. ;)Trishahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16927558937796802496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929885462293344093.post-82314692066506977072012-04-26T14:15:46.305-07:002012-04-26T14:15:46.305-07:00As much as I don't want to, I try to pay atten...As much as I don't want to, I try to pay attention to word count. So many factors help to categorize our work. Word count is one of them. If we want our work placed appropriately, we have to be aware of the word count requirements.Angela Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03324366495151363782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929885462293344093.post-45797301342083201372012-04-26T13:48:30.773-07:002012-04-26T13:48:30.773-07:00I wrote and finished a NaNo novel at 50,000 words,...I wrote and finished a NaNo novel at 50,000 words, then was so disappointed to find it was too short for the genre I'd written in (women's paranormal fiction). So my lesson was learned the hard way--pubs weren't interested in it (though I did get an agent, who was new and unaware of word count expectations). I definitely think for a wanna-be debut author, you can't afford NOT to keep your book within the confines of word count, like Sambuchino said--gives you better chances of breaking out of the pack!Heather Day Gilberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12353914883176152555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929885462293344093.post-30721114588922632852012-04-26T12:03:15.086-07:002012-04-26T12:03:15.086-07:00I do, and I'm always worried about coming up s...I do, and I'm always worried about coming up short. I tend to write shorter pieces, so if a story ends up being a novella instead of a novel based on word count, I'm OK with that. I mostly use word count for weekly and monthly goals.Tonjahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08652479946102909276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929885462293344093.post-852540771153559292012-04-26T10:30:13.692-07:002012-04-26T10:30:13.692-07:00I have a general idea when I start a draft, and th...I have a general idea when I start a draft, and then I really hone in on it during editing.Nicolehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10680066584646789184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5929885462293344093.post-23262497935092439852012-04-26T09:03:06.461-07:002012-04-26T09:03:06.461-07:00I don't pay too much attention to word count w...I don't pay too much attention to word count when I'm writing, but when I'm ready to submit I know the markets most likely to accept - usually I veer towards small-press publishers, I like the 'working outside the system' feel of the smaller presses.Annalisa Crawfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14943610814274794998noreply@blogger.com
