IWSG: Independence Day

First Wednesday of the month = Insecure Writer's Support Group

Happy Independence Day USA!

Are you an independent writer? Blogger? Human? I say, no. As writers, we depend upon others, whether that be critique partners or readers. We need other people. Bloggers. We need other bloggers and readers. Humans. Likewise.

Maybe I don't understand the word, independent. Let's look it up. According to

Definition of INDEPENDENT

1: not dependent: as
a (1): not subject to control by others : self governing   (2): not affiliated with a larger controlling unit independent bookstore>
b (1): not requiring or relying on something else : not contingent independent conclusion> (2): not looking to others for one's opinions or for guidance in conduct (3): not bound by or committed to a political party
c (1): not requiring or relying on others (as for care or livelihood) <independent of her parents> (2): being enough to free one from the necessity of working for a living independent means>
d: showing a desire for freedom independent manner>
e (1): not determined by or capable of being deduced or derived from or expressed in terms of members (as axioms or equations) of the set under consideration; (2): having the property that the joint probability (as of events or samples) or the joint probability density function (as of random variables) equals the product of the probabilities or probability density functions of separate occurrence

What do you think?
As a writer, blogger, human, are YOU dependent upon others?

  1. I think humans are created to be part of a community, or more than one community. Our blogging community is a great help for writers. I don't think any of us can be truly independent of each other. I know I rely on a lot of blogging friends for feedback and inspiration.

  2. I am not in the least bit independent; I totally need my other writers and bloggers out there for support. Whether I know them online or in real life, they have been vital to my writing journey, and I hope, for some of them, I have returned that favour.

  3. Interesting take on terminology. But the spelling is different for Indie Authors. It isn't independent, it is indie-pendent and as yet (I am not 100% certain) is not included in any dictionaries to date!

  4. I think independent/dependent isn't toggle switch (one or the other) but a sliding scale. Or a bunch of sliding scales, for all the parts of a person's life.

  5. Inter-dependent on various levels is the way I would describe it. We really do get by with a little help from our friends.

Happy Independence Day from a Canadian friend.

  6. I'm a co-dependent. When my husband wants to go out and have a beer, I want to go out and have a beer!

I also selected you for two awards. Come get em!

  7. blogging is totally dependent! so is selling a book!
pubbing independently is doing everything yourself, but sales & reviews are still dependent on others...

    happy dependence day =)

  8. I think you're only dependent if you need responses to your writing -- and who doesn't? But technically, the hermit in a log cabin can still write a novel without any feedback at all.
