#IWSG: Writing Research - Emotional Flaws

It's the first Wednesday of the month, which means it's time for an Insecure Writers Support Group post!

http://www.insecurewriterssupportgroup.com/

IWSG Question of the Month: What is the weirdest / coolest thing you've ever had to research for your story.

Oh . . . I research SO MANY FABULOUS things! It's one of the best parts about being a writer.

Lately, I've been researching and studying emotional flaws, which is more interesting the more I learn about it.

Here are two great sites with more information about character flaws:

Fascinating discussion on the topic of flaws. "Every one of us has a fundamental flaw, an immaturity of character, a dark side or negative tendency." More:

(this is also the source for the image above)

List of over a hundred different flaws: http://darkworldrpg.com/character-flaws/

What would you consider your emotional flaw?

Or if that's too personal, what is the emotional flaw of the main character in the story you're currently working on?

#IWSG: Helpful #Writing Resources

Sometimes, a post written by another writer can provide the inspiration or motivation you might need to push yourself to the next level ... or to simply write the next word in your current project. Below are a few posts that I've recently found inspiring. I hope they help you, too.

The first Wednesday of the month is Insecure Writer's Support Group! If you've not heard of the group before ... click on the link below the picture and check out the fantastic resources and support this group has to offer.

Here are some additional links to posts that I've enjoyed recently:

Do you ever get distracted by a "shiny new idea" before you've finished the hard work on your project in progress? If so, here's a great post for you: http://writerunboxed.com/2015/06/24/resisting-the-lure-of-the-shiny-new-idea/#more-37781

Do you struggle to show the emotions of your characters (without over-using clenched stomachs and gritted teeth)? Here's a great lesson on the topic of emotions: http://www.livewritethrive.com/2015/06/24/how-fiction-writers-can-show-emotions-in-their-characters-in-effective-ways/

Vulnerability is the Birthplace of Creativity

On the eve of my debut novel's birthday, I'm feeling excited AND ... vulnerable. It's a crazy mix of emotions, and it takes my breath away.

Here's an amazing TED Talk that nails how I'm feeling.

"Vulnerability is the birthplace of joy, creativity, belonging, and love."

This talk made me laugh and cry. It's worth the time to watch and listen:

Do you live whole-heartedly with courage, compassion, and connection?

Do you believe you are "enough" - just the way you are?

Emotional Scenes

Sometimes ... I get so caught up in a scene I'm writing ... so involved with the characters and the emotions ... that I find myself crying. Not just welling up with tears, but tears actually rolling down my cheeks, one after another.

Then I stop, and I read what I've written, and I *hope* that the emotion I'm feeling is translated to the page.

*sigh*

How about you?
Have you written or read anything recently that has moved you to tears?
