C is for Conferences

So … you want to be a writer? Where do you start? How do you get there? No worries. This month I’ll be sharing my A to Z list of writer’s resources: books, blogs, and beyond! Check back each day to find helpful resources for improving your writing and navigating your way through the publishing industry.

C is for Conferences

Writers' conferences are a huge resource for information, networking, and pitching. Agents, editors, publishers, and fellow writers attend these conferences to teach and learn from each other. The first conference you attend is likely to be quite overwhelming (it was for me), but I also learned a lot, got my hopes up a lot, and made friends a lot. Chances are, there's a great local conference near you.

Simply go to Google, type in your state, writer conference, and see what pops up on your screen.

You can also visit:

And if you think you're too much of an introvert to ever attend such a public event, then WriteOnCon is for you!! This is an awesome writers' online conference: WriteOnCon

Have you ever attended a conference - - or want to attend a conference? Which one?

  1. I've attended quite a few and spoken at several, too. My first one was the Virginia Festival of the Book.

  2. I've attended conferences hosted by 'The Word Guild' and 'CANSCAIP'. Also local workshops and an RWA workshop. They are worthwhile - informative and inspiring. Looking forward to attending something local this fall, and hopefully a bigger conference in 2015.

  6. I'm heading to RWA Spring Fling at the end of the month, a regional conference in Chicago area. I attended two years ago and had no intention of joining Romance Writers, but I made great connections there and the local chapter invited me to their meeting. The organization--and that conference--changed my writing life. For real. I have also enjoyed Write On Con, though an in person conference is a great experience.

  7. I love conferences and attend Oklahoma's local writers conference every year. At our conference you can volunteer to 'shepherd' an agent, editor, or author. It's a great way to make contacts in the writing world.

  8. I haven't been to any big conferences yet. Our regional SCBWI is relatively small, so we don't necessarily have a conference every year.

This year I get to go to Storymakers in Utah. I have a bunch of friend who'll be there that I'll get to meet for the first time. I'm looking forward to it.

  9. I haven't worked up the nerve to attend a conference yet, but now I have an incentive to go!

  10. I haven't been to any conferences yet, but I'm out in the boonies, so I'd have to plan a trip to make it to any. I'm also quite shy in person, so the idea of going to a conference and meeting people face to face is terrifying!

    1. Try the WRITEONCON - it's an online conference, and you don't have to come face to face with anyone! ;)

  11. I'd really love to attend a conference in SF, any conference.... but as I'm in Japan, it will have to stay a dream for the foreseeable future. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  13. I absolutely love writer conferences. I went to AWP earlier this year and have gone to SCBWI for the last two years. It's a great place to meet other writers, just like you said :)

  15. This is one of the posts I was trying to leave a comment on last night!

I'm always saying I wish I could go to more conferences ... but of course it would require me to have a huge travel budget. But they do have a writer's festival every year. Someday I'd like to make it a monetary priority to attend lots of panels there.
