May's Question: Do you have any rituals that you use when you need help getting into the ZONE?

My Answer: Yes! Music. With each manuscript, I choose at least one song that represents the mood and energy of the story. Sometimes, I create a playlist of multiple songs. I listen to it to set the right tone and focus my mind. Other times, I will listen to high energy music and dance around the room with my dog to vitalize my mind. And other times, I'll listen to instrumental music while typing to help my mind zero in on the words and flow of sentences. Music is a huge resource for me.

What about you? Do you have writing rituals?

  1. How lucky you are, Margo, wish I could use music, but any sound and I can' t get much done 🌹

  2. I love to create playlists for my stories, too, and they definitely help me get in the mood to write.

  3. I kind of admire people who use music the way you do. I personally find it a distraction unless it's very quiet, soothing, and has no lyrics.

  4. I love to listen to music when I write, as well, and I find myself listening to what my characters are inclined to listen to. It helps me get inside their heads. I bet your playlists are as broad stroked as mine are. :) Thanks for sharing this month!

  5. I don't have rituals. But when I do write to music, I find myself inspired.

  6. That's neat to have a playlist for your writing! I think I've read a few authors who even include a playlist page in their books that list the songs they used to write those books.

  7. I'm another who'd prefer no music. My husband likes noise around him, and leaves the TV on even when he's not watching it. Just likes the noise.
I'd love the silence, but I may try non-instrumental music, cool jazz or symphony. Just not Native American chanting, or yoga-type Indian music. Both of them my husband uses when he wakes in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. Which, he plays on the Alexa. Near MY side of the bed
I figure I'll make Heaven on the basis of not having killed him for that.
