Dear Santa,
Please buy me a brand new book for Christmas. Not a used book. A new book. Purchasing new books helps support the wonderful publishing industry which I so badly want to be a part of in the near future. But, if people stop buying books... what will happen to my bright future as an author? Please, Santa, all I want for Christmas is a brand new book.

Borders Reports a 74.4 Million loss in Quarter 3

Was just talking to my wife about this the other day ... by the end of 2011 Barnes & Noble may be the only brick and mortar large chain bookstore left. Remember when they came into vogue several years ago and ran all of the small bookstores out of business? I guess the little guy may get the last laugh, although I hate it for all of the people who work at the big stores.

Ooh, I'm contributing big time! My hubby always asks for "the list". Then after he reads it, he usually says, "I'm not just getting you books for Christmas", then I make a pouty face and he ends up getting me lots of books, a sweater, or some jewelry. God, I love that man. Merry Christmas to me! And Merry Christmas to you!!

ReplyDeleteI hate chain bookstores. Soon maybe some mom and pop bookstores will return, almost like a vintage antique vibe. An homage to the time when books killed trees.
ReplyDeleteAt first I was going to wrtie and say athat B & N's loss might be due to the increase in e-books, but then I remembered they sell e-books too.
ReplyDeleteSo it is discouraging, indeed. I wonder what book sales are in comparison to B & N's sales?
I'm all for e-books because they've helped me buy more new books than I would otherwise (instant access, greater portability, less clutter, a little cheaper, cool new tech). For the great books, though, the ones that really matter - I still buy hard cover. No way to replace that new book smell!
