Winter Camping in Idaho

Well, what did you do last weekend? Me? I stayed at home in my nice warm house while my husband took my daughter winter camping. (Blech)

They promised lots of great pictures, but apparently, they got distracted with the cross-country skiing, the snow cave digging, and the steep hill climbing activities.

My totally awesome daughter!

See that tiny box near the middle of the picture? That's some of their camping gear down by the ski trail. They camped on the top of a huge hill and had to carry their gear up it! Did I say, "BLECH?!"

Not much snow in southern Idaho this year - but plenty of beautiful blue skies!

What about you? Have you ever slept in a snow cave?

  1. Beautiful pictures! But in my opinion, views like these are best seen from inside a toasty warm cabin, with a roaring fires crackling in the fireplace and a mug of schnapps-spiked hot cocoa in your hand.

So, ummm, no -- I've never slept in a snow cave. ;^)

  2. No, no, no. No camping in snow. Are they crazy?

Skiing would be fun, though. :))

  3. Looks like fun! Why didn't you go? I love the cold weather...

  4. I love warm weather and sunshine a lot better, but I also love snow and camping so I would definitely be for this kind of trip. Looks like an awesome time!

  5. WOW! Kudos to your husband and daughter. I love snow and cold weather, but snow camping is a whole other level of snow/cold love.

  6. How brave? I hate being cold and I'm not a big fan of snow. So why do I live in Canada. I'm not really sure.

  7. Oh, I so love Idaho. Beautiful! Brave souls doing winter camping...impressive! Margo, I opened your blog and then saw I had an email, hopped over and it was you commenting on my blog. Do-do-do-do (meant to be the Twilight Zone song) :-) Lol! Have a great weekend!

  8. I hate Idaho. I've lived there most of my life. I now live in Utah. And it isn't much better. It's like comparing Pocatello to Idaho Falls. If I was going to go camping, it would never be where there is cold and snow. Never. How awful.

  10. My husband was a leader in a youth group called Pathfinders. They were going winter camping so I went along. It was snowing and blowing as we walked across a frozen lake and set up our tent under a tree. My hubby laid fir tree branches under the tent. He was as hot as a furnace and I was actually too hot during the night! I did leave early though. One night was enough.

  11. Ha! Funny that we both posted about our family camping trips on the same weekend. Your daughter's trip sounds like a blast. I wish we could have had snow for our Girl Scout trip. We were ready to sled and snowshoe, but the weather Gods had other ideas. It's truly bizarre how little snow we've gotten this year. I've never seen a Northeast Ohio winter like it.

  12. Thanks for the pics. Wherein Idaho is this.I moved to the Caribbean two years ago from Swan Valley,Idaho. The pics are beautiful. I could miss it for a day. If I had a transporter (think 'beam me up Scotty') I wouldn't mind a day of winter fun, but living there on a permanent basis again. No thanks. Yes I've camped in the winter. There and in Colorado where we lived above 10,000 feet.

  13. Beautiful pics. I like snow best with the prospect of a crackling log fire and mulled wine at the end of the day. Camping for me is strictly a warm weather activity!

  14. The pictures are nice but I don't care for a cold snowy environ.

  15. Yah, waaaay back when. Now? No way. However, I do know how to make a snug bed out of evergreens, build a fire, carry waterproof matches with my lighters and a possibles bag with, among other necessary things, a little plastic baggie of Duralog--used to be sterno.

Today, camping is in May and near a river so I can swim. Hubs is at the point he said to heck with sleeping on the ground in a tent, let's rent a cabin. lolol! (Might have something to do with a bear sniffing the tent the last time we camped out near Lake Chat, in N.Idaho).

  16. I'd love to, but I've never been anywhere with any decent amount of snow! Here there's a centimeter or so sat in the garden. Not even enough to stop me cycling into university in the mornings.

  17. I would've stayed home, too. Summer, count me in. Winter? Not so much.

Your daughter looks happy! Great pic :)

  20. I hate the cold, so winter camping sounds like a nightmare to me! I'm all about staying toasty warm.

I'm in your YA Campaign group this time (we were in the Thriller group together last Campaign).

  21. For an extremely warm-blooded creature like me, 'winter camping' sounds as bad as a trip to the dentist. Loved the pictures.
