New Writing! New Post!

YAY! June 1st!

I've been reading Stephen King's ON WRITING ... everyone said it was great ... WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO READ IT?? It is great. I'm really enjoying it (nearly finished), and I've marked a lot of great ideas.

The idea I'm acting on today: write 2000 words. That's less than ten pages. That's doable. Right?

Well, I had the same goal yesterday and achieved 72 words. Silly. But I got distracted with researching the interesting topics for my new manuscript. Yup. That's right. I've started writing something BRAND NEW. It's all shiny and untouched. A little scary ... but VERY exciting.

So today, I'm not going to allow myself to research (can I keep that promise?), and I'm just going to write, until I reach that 2000 word goal, and then maybe I'll research more.

Do you have a daily word count goal when you're writing a first draft?

Check back on Monday, and I'll share another tip from King's book.

  1. LOVE this book! I re-read it a couple months ago and gleaned all kinds of new tips I had somehow missed the first time I read it. Have fun with your shiny new idea!!

  2. I love that book too. In fact, I really need to re-read it.
2K goal is definitely doable! Good luck!

  3. I think it's funny that all of Stephen King's books are best sellers, including the one in which he talks about nothing but writing.

  4. I've read that book twice and plan on reading it again soon. Love it!

Good luck with your new project. :)

  5. Glad you're enjoying the book. With Stephen King as the author, there's surely tons of take-aways.

You can reach your goal of 2k words today. Go for it!

I haven't set a daily goal, though I really should apply myself to the 250 word a day challenge that has had my interest for like, ever.

  6. I'd never read anything of Stephen King's before On Writing, and I think the thing that really struck me was what a great writer he really is, lol! (Kind of a *duh* moment for me, but still.) And go go go, with your word count goal!

  7. I've been in re-write mode for so long I've forgotten what it feels like to write a first draft. But I'm pulling for you to make your 2K goal.

  8. No, I don't have a daily word count goal. I think and write in chapters, and a chapter might take me 1 day -- or several, depending on the chapter and whatever else is going on.

If writing was my full time profession, I can see where a structured goal like that might help.

  9. On Writing is my favorite book on writing.

I don't usually have a word count goal--just a time goal. I use it to get started, i.e. I will put my butt in the chair and write for 15 minutes. By the time 15 minutes has passed, I'm hooked and write until I can't write anymore.

  10. Writing any amount of words each day is an accomplishment. I tried daily word count goals and disappointed myself often. So I moved on to time spent goals. I promised myself an hour at the computer of actual writing. Then I would reward myself with research, Twitter and blogging.

On Writing, is fabulous. I turned it away so many times over the years. Two years ago, I checked it out from the library and read it in one night. So much of what he says is true. One thing people have to keep in mind, is the book is not about writing horror books, it's a writing tool for every, single writer out there, even picture book writers.

If you write, and you haven't picked it up, do so. Today. :)

  11. Hi Margo. If I do, I break it. I like to go to motivational groups - been attending my Writer's Centre Rabbit Hole this weekend - 30,000 words in 3 days which i think is ridiculous, but I used the time/motivation to do a rewrite on my first novel which needs a lot of work.

"On Writing" is great. Currently reading "Write Away" by Elizabeth George. That's amazing too.
