IWSG: Distractions

It's that time of month again ... I mean ... it's the first Wednesday of the month, and that equals INSECURE WRITER'S SUPPORT GROUP.  For complete details on this awesome group CLICK HERE!

As for me ... I've been struggling with distractions. I need to finish the revisions on my work-in-progress and get the manuscript back to my agent, but I've been distracted by SO MANY THINGS. Like my daughter graduating from high school (yes, back in May ... I've been revising for a long time!), girls camp, family vacation, gardening, getting my daughter ready to leave for college, and the prepublication activities for my debut novel.

The last two items on the list have been, by far, the most distracting!!

It's all good stuff, and I'm not complaining. ... I just wish I could finish this round of revisions already!!! Then I could focus on my sweet daughter's remaining time here, and I could get uber-excited about my debut releasing!

Here are some exciting things that have been said about Who R U Really? by industry experts:

So ... what distracts you when you're trying to work? How do you ignore the distractions or better balance your time? I need all the advice I can get! ;)

  1. Just about everything is the answer to your question about what distracts me. It's so hard to get into the zone, and once I'm there, I'm a bear when someone pulls me out of it.

    Great Kirkus review! Congratulations.

  2. I find that no one thing works for me, so I can't say that I can really give any advice. It's always a process of trial and error for me. Some days are good (nothing can distract me) and some times, I'm just all over the place.

  3. Sounds like you have some good distractions, Margo! One of my distractions this week was a burned out computer. Bought a new one, had the old hard drive transferred over, and Office added. Now I'm rarin' to go again. I did a personal NaNo in Ju/Jul five weeks of writing a new novel. A five-day writing seminar in July netted me some great comments on how to improve the story. Best of Success with your first publication! Aloha.

  4. Everything distracts me when I should be working. Although, it sounds like your distractions are good ones to have. Hopefully, though, you can get to your revisions and get them done. Good luck!

  5. Hope you get them done soon so you can enjoy some time with your daughter. I finally had to buckle down earlier this week and finish my revisions so I could send the manuscript to my critique partners. (And I sent it Tuesday night, which was good, because I wasn't getting anything done yesterday during IWSG day!)

  6. Everything distracts me when I am trying to work--unfortunately, I let the distractions do their dirty work. But setting realistic daily writing goals sure helps. Good luck!

  7. Everything distracts me at this point: from "gee I think I should go buy ice cream I'll probably not eat" to "wow I spent all day writing court reports and now you want me to write fiction?" And then, there's the grass that was growing but now is dying.

You seem to have a priority list though, so that has to count for something. So cool your sweet daughter is going off to college. Quite an accomplishment.

  8. SQUIRREL!!! ;) Many times everything distract me: music, the tv (sound), my kids, myself over FB (ugh)... But I know I put on the ole "blinders" (the mind is a powerful thing if you let it) I get tons done! xD

  9. Congrats, Margo. The book sounds like good stuff. Distractions? Social media, non-fiction writing, editing - some of the stuff that keeps me away from finishing the stuff I need to complete.

  10. If we weren't distracted by something then we'd either be asleep, dead, or have the most amazing power of concentration of anyone. I'm always distracted by something, usually by travels, things I do for my wife, or things I find around the house. There's always something to distract me from things I should be doing or would like to be doing. Oh well, that's life!
