Quote for Inspiration

"... create heroes who: Offer the most conflict in that situation, have the longest way to go emotionally, and are the most demographically pleasing." -- Blake Snyder (SAVE THE CAT)

What do you think about that?

  1. I totally agree with the first two points, but what does 'demographically pleasing' mean? Is that demographics of readers? Are we being advised to write characters just because of their popularity potential?

That might be a gross misinterpretation, but that's what I get from it.

  2. I'm with Angeline--what does demographically pleasing even mean? Like writing for a certain demographic (like teens, adults, certain populations??). Interesting though, I rather like the first two points, particularly with having the longest way to go emotionally!

I'm also stuck with "demographically pleasing." I'm assuming it's to the readers. But I also think it is dangerous to try to second-guess one's readers like that.

But then, what does a Bear really know about writing?

  4. Interesting quote!
(also stuck on the demographically pleasing, but I'll assume that it refers to someone a reader might relate to)
What resonates most for me is the part about emotional growth. I've always questioned heroes that are already perfect in the beginning of the story, since that gives them little room for improvement!
I've always preferred my heroes broken.
