A very enjoyable book, and it certainly made me appreciate all of the food in our pantry.
On Goodreads.com I gave the book four stars. The two reasons I didn't give it five stars are: 1) I'm not a huge fan of "diary-entry" style novels and 2) I felt like the voice and actions of the main character were more of a 13 or 14 year old girl, rather than the 16 year old, she was supposed to be.
I spend a lot of time working with young women, and there's a huge maturity difference between 12, 14, and 16. So, I had trouble believing that the main character was 16. I think I'll have my daughter (nearly 16) read it and see what she thinks. Who knows? Maybe I'm wrong. :)
The ending was a bit predictable and the middle section was a little slow, but otherwise, I enjoyed the book and plan to read the next in the series.

Interesting. I'm reading this book right now, about 25% of the way done (according to my Kindle).
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the voice of the character, it does sound rather young. The story is interesting though, however, at this point I think it's missing an overall story goal. It just seems like a record of events happening to this character instead of what she plans to do about them (even if it's internally).
The book does keep my interest though with the notion of the 'End of the World' situation.
If you think this book is boring, don't read the sequel. I actually liked the first book quite a bit, but after that, the author seemed to have run out of ideas as to how to make succeeding books different. There are lots of things she could've explored, in my opinion, but kept droning on about the lack of food and so on, that was the big issue, besides the cold, in the first book.
