IWSG: Real Life is SO Distracting!

"The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs."

YIKES. If ever I've fit the definition of an insecure writer, it's this month, and last month!!!

As you may have noticed, I've been distracted lately by my "real life" - - - it's been so busy; I've not kept up with my blog posts or my WIP.

I bought a book on time management, but I've haven't found the time to read it yet. *sigh*

So ... here's a quote to get you by for the next couple of days:

"Shift your thinking to the less-sophisticated teen sensibility, phrasing the text so it focuses more on how the events are affecting the protagonist than the other characters involved ... use quick judgment and action, letting the chips fall where they may" - - Deborah Halverson (WRITING YA FICTION FOR DUMMIES, p. 161).

Friday, I will feature an exerpt from:
Victoria Jackson and Ali Guthy, authors of Saving Each Other: A Mystery Illness, A Search for the Cure, A Mother-Daughter Love Story

  1. I know all about Time Management. Well that lack of it of course.

  2. I hate it when real life gets in the way of my blogging and writing. This is my first time trying the IWSG...I totally fit the description. My life is busy being a wife and mom, and my hubby The Engineer has a million unfinished project all over my house. He's truly an inventor at heart, and one day we'll make millions from some little thing he invents. Meanwhile...we're remodeling our bedroom so all is in chaos and the only relaxation I get is writing. But precious little of it. Very nice to meet you.

  3. Real life always gets in the way of a good story, doesn't it? I'm amazed that anyone can find time to write/create anything in this constantly wired world.

That's a great quote, btw... I do try to show how the events of the story directly and immediately affect the protagonist (especially in my 1st-person narration) but that one word 'sensibility' has me worried. I have a tendency to make my teen characters see things with adult glasses - they often consider or at least acknowledge the (potential) consequences of their actions. Teens aren't usually that self-aware or careful, are they?

  4. I LOVE that quote. LOVE it. And there's seriously nothing more frustrating when you feel the inspiration to write, and real life gets in the way. Spot on. :)

  7. I like your quote. I think we have a hidden teenager in all of us we can channel to help us nail those points. Good luck with the time management.

  8. If it makes you feel better, I think I've seen a half dozen posts today that talk about not having enough time.

Of course, since I was trying to get caught up on my blog reading, I totally missed my scheduled writing time. Argh!

  9. I sometimes wonder how those who write about time management have time to write it. I figure if they have time to think about it, they probably don't have an issue with it. :D Anyway, there's irony there.

  10. Hee hee, Margo, this is the third post I've read about time management today for IWSG. Maybe it's because we're galloping towards the end of the year already! How can time go so fast. We must be having fun.

  11. Wow. It is like you took the words right out of my head. I am dealing with the biggest real life distraction right now. Work is distracting me. My family, my kids, parents - you name it. I am feeling your real life distractions.

  12. It's SO hard to find the time for everything these days. I'm trying to come to the realization that I can't "make" time, so I have to "take" time by setting priorities.

  13. I know exactly how you feel. It can be so hard balancing all of life's usual requirements with reading. I've been spending most of my out-of-work hours on preparing for my book launch recently, which means the fridge is empty and the floor is covered in dust!
